Job Work for Fragrance — Mixing, Maceration, and Chilling Explained
Fragrance production involves several stages that are specific to this category and do not apply to skincare or haircare manufacturing. Mixing, maceration, and chilling are three interconnected processes that determine the stability, clarity, and sensory performance of a finished perfume. If you are bringing your own fragrance oil to a job work manufacturer for filling, understanding what these processes involve — and which ones apply to your formula — helps you plan your production timeline accurately and get better results.
The fragrance production sequence
Most alcohol-based fragrance products go through a sequence of production steps before filling. The formula components — fragrance oil, ethanol or carrier, and any additional ingredients — must be combined, the blend must be allowed to mature (maceration), unstable wax components must be removed (chilling), and the clarified blend must be filtered before filling. Not all products require all steps — oil-based fragrances and some simple formulas have shorter production sequences — but understanding the full sequence gives you the framework to identify which steps apply to your product.
Mixing — blending the fragrance components
The first step is combining the formula components. For an alcohol-based eau de parfum, this typically means combining the fragrance oil with ethanol (or a Halal-compliant carrier) in the correct ratio. The mixing is done in a stainless steel tank with gentle agitation to ensure thorough combination. Mixing is usually relatively quick — a few hours at most — but it must be done carefully. The order of addition, the temperature, and the agitation speed can all affect the blend. Adding fragrance oil too quickly to cold ethanol, for example, can cause precipitation of some fragrance components. Your fragrance supplier or the job work manufacturer’s production team will advise on the correct mixing protocol for your blend. When supplying fragrance oil to a job work manufacturer for mixing, provide the IFRA certificate for the blend, the usage level at which it is certified, and any known sensitivities of the formula — components that require specific temperature or addition sequence.
Maceration — why fragrances need time
Maceration is the maturation period after mixing, during which the fragrance blend is allowed to rest — typically in a sealed stainless steel tank — before chilling and filtration. During maceration, the molecular interactions between fragrance components, ethanol, and any fixatives stabilise. The blend may go through a period of looking cloudy or slightly hazy as components interact, before clarifying. Skipping maceration or cutting it short typically produces a fragrance that smells ‘green’ or ‘harsh’ — the full development of the fragrance character has not occurred. The required maceration time varies by formula complexity. Simple formulas may macerate for 24–48 hours. Complex fine fragrance formulas often macerate for 1–4 weeks, sometimes longer for premium products. The maceration requirement for your formula should be specified by your perfumer or fragrance supplier. Include this in your brief to the job work manufacturer so they can schedule accordingly — a production run that requires three weeks of maceration has a very different timeline than one that can be filled within 24 hours of mixing.
Chilling — removing wax and natural extracts
After maceration, many fragrance blends contain waxy or fatty components — natural extracts, fixatives, or fragrance ingredients that are solid or semi-solid at low temperatures — that would cause the finished product to appear cloudy or to deposit waxy material on the bottle walls over time. Chilling (also called refrigeration or cold filtration) removes these components by cooling the blend to a temperature low enough to cause them to solidify, then filtering them out. The blend is typically chilled to between -5°C and -15°C in a temperature-controlled tank for 24–72 hours, then filtered through a polishing filter while still cold. Not all fragrances require chilling — formulas containing predominantly synthetic aromachemicals and no natural wax-containing extracts may be naturally clear and stable without chilling. Your perfumer or the manufacturer’s production team can advise whether your specific blend requires chilling. If you are supplying a pre-blended and chilled fragrance oil from your perfumer, the chilling step may have already been done — confirm this with your supplier before briefing the manufacturer on the full production sequence.
Filtration and clarity
After chilling, the blend is filtered to remove the precipitated wax components and any other particulates. Filtration uses a series of filter elements with progressively smaller pore sizes — from coarse pre-filtration to fine polishing filtration — to produce a perfectly clear finished blend ready for filling. Clarity is both a quality and a regulatory concern. A finished perfume that is not clear — that has visible haze, cloudiness, or floating particles — will be rejected by quality inspection and by consumers. The filter specification required depends on the formula and the target clarity standard. Highly clear glass bottles show any clarity deficiency immediately; matte, coloured, or opaque bottles are more forgiving. Discuss clarity requirements and the expected filtration steps with your job work manufacturer as part of the brief.
Oil-based fragrance — a simpler process
Oil-based fragrances — attar, perfume oil, and roll-on oil formats — have a much simpler production sequence than alcohol-based fragrances. There is no maceration requirement because the oil carrier does not require the same stabilisation time as ethanol. Chilling is typically not required because the oil carrier naturally keeps any waxy fragrance components in solution. The production steps are typically just mixing (combining fragrance oil with carrier oil in the correct ratio) and filling. This is one reason oil-based fragrance production has a shorter lead time than alcohol-based fragrance — there is no waiting for maceration or chilling.
What to provide for fragrance job work
When briefing a job work manufacturer for fragrance mixing, maceration, and filling, provide: the fragrance oil with IFRA certificate and usage level; the carrier — ethanol or carrier oil — or confirmation that the manufacturer will supply it; the target formula ratio (percentage of fragrance oil in the finished product); the maceration time required for your blend; whether chilling and filtration are required and the target clarity standard; the filling format (bottle type, neck finish, pump or spray type, fill volume); the quantity to produce; and any packaging components you are supplying. The more specific and complete this information, the more accurately the manufacturer can plan and produce your product.
